Chapter Eight

When Winny left her room and went to have breakfast with Lana and her aunt, Lana realized Winny meant to talk to her aunt right now. She proceeded to panic in what she thought was a controlled and dignified manner—which meant she sat on the toilet in her locked bathroom and breathed very carefully for ten minutes, all the while making a precise mental list of what they’d say to Aunt Mary and in what order. Then she breathed in deeply, splashed some water on her face, and walked to the kitchen.

Aunt took one look at Winny’s presence at her breakfast table and her expression closed off. Winny sat down, pretending cheerfully that she hadn’t seen it, while Lana sat very straight, face very blank, and thought about item one on the list: Start the conversation before Winifred can, because Winny doesn’t know Aunt as well as I do.

“Good morning, Aunt Mary,” Lana said. “We would like to speak to you about Pedro’s words three days ago.”

Aunt set down a big plate of scrambled eggs in the middle of the table and sat down heavily.

“What is there to talk about?” her aunt asked, tone of voice as even and bland as Lana’s.

“I think none of us want Lana to actually lose her job,” Winny said. She was very bad at keeping her tone of voice bland or even—her face smiled and her voice went upbeat automatically, for all that her eyes betrayed how serious she was. “Out of the three of us, you’re the only one Pedro might actually listen to.”

Her aunt sent Lana a pointed look.

“You gave Winifred three months,” Lana said. “They haven’t passed yet.”

The woman sighed explosively and stood up to make herself some coffee.

“So you don’t want to take the obvious and straightforward route and get your friend out of here as quickly as possible. You want me to fix your mess?” she asked. “I thought you told Pedro you weren’t a child.”

Lana almost gritted her teeth. “I’m asking for your help as an adult, because Pedro will not hear me, precisely because he thinks of me as a child.”

“Look, you two looked like you were friends,” Winny said, waving a hand at Aunt Mary. “Just talk to him, nice and easy-going! Just impress upon him how good an employee Lana is and how fucked the Aquarium will be without her. Just—hold on until I actually find an apartment and, like, stop inviting him over for dinner—”

“We are not friends,” Aunt Mary said distastefully.

“I need your support,” Lana said loudly, interrupting them. “Aunt Mary. I know you are unhappy with Winifred being here. I know you have your concerns. But you allowed her to come for a reason. Because you know that what her family did to her was wrong, no matter your opinions. Now you are doing your best to drive her away as well.”

“I’m not her parents,” her aunt said firmly, swiveling around to glare at her. “I have no responsibility toward her.”

“Then
